Tailgate Traditions

Tailgating 101

When it’s game day in Raiderland, it’s time to get your “Guns Up!” Tailgating at Texas Tech is a Lone Star spectacle, with fans decked out in scarlet and black, barbecuing and tossing footballs under the West Texas sky.

The Stadium

Stadium History

Opened in 1947 as Clifford B. and Audrey Jones Stadium, it was initially a modest venue with a seating capacity of just 27,000. But like everything in Texas, it has grown a lot bigger and better over the years. After a series of expansions and renovations, the stadium now holds over 60,000 fans. The stadium got a major facelift in 2003, courtesy of AT&T. The renovations included a new west side building housing luxury suites, loge boxes, club seats, and a massive press box. On the outside, the building was given a Spanish Renaissance architectural style, echoing the rest of the Texas Tech campus. Unique to college stadiums, the field is actually some 30 feet below ground level, contributing to the unique character of the venue.
