Win the Weekend

Heading to Baton Rouge, Louisiana for a gameday? Dive into our breakdown of what you should do for your upcoming trip.
We’ve got to start this section with a “Geaux Tigers” in Ed O’s voice… Louisiana State University (LSU) is a vibrant institution nestled right off the Mississippi River in the charming city of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Founded in 1860, LSU’s history is steeped in tradition and pride. As a flagship university of Louisiana, LSU offers a diverse range of academic programs and is known for its strong focus on research. Its beautiful campus is adorned with live oak trees draped in Spanish moss and features the iconic Memorial Tower, a landmark that stands tall as a symbol of hope and resilience. The city of Baton Rouge complements the campus with its unique blend of Cajun and Creole cultures, providing a rich culinary and musical backdrop. The bar district, Tigerland, provides an excellent backdrop for debauchery surrounding a weekend at LSU.

Gameday

LSU’s football program, founded in 1893, boasts a rich tradition, winning multiple national championships and producing legendary players such as Billy Cannon, Tyrann Mathieu, and Joe Burrow. The Bayou Bengals are known for their ferocious defense and creative offenses, often reflecting the fiery passion of Louisiana itself. Under the leadership of coaches like Paul Dietzel, Nick Saban, Les Miles, and Ed Orgeron, the program has maintained a reputation for excellence with several National Championships.

Tailgate Traditions

Tailgating 101

When it comes to college football, few places can match the energy of Death Valley on a Saturday night. Regardless of game time, the alluring smell of gumbo to the infectious rhythm of Zydeco music, tailgating at LSU is a sensory experience unlike any other. Fans gather around their purple and gold tents, cooking up traditional Louisiana dishes like jambalaya, crawfish boils, and boudin.

The Stadium

Stadium History

Enter the Death Valley of the South, Tiger Stadium, and feel the roar of 102,000-plus fans that makes this one of the most intimidating venues in college football. Built in 1924, Tiger Stadium has undergone numerous expansions and renovations to become a modern coliseum where legends are made. Named after the 1st Infantry Division of the U.S. Army that fought in World War I, the stadium provides a battle-like atmosphere that’s palpable from the moment you step in. Notable games include the “Earthquake Game” against Auburn in 1988, where the crowd’s roar registered on a seismograph.

What to Watch For

  • Mike the Tiger’s Habitat, LSU’s live mascot 15,000-square foot environment
  • Unique H-Style Goal Posts – Only 3 schools in the country have these.  Installed in 1993 to celebrate 100 years of LSU football.
  • On the field, the yard markers are every 5 yards instead of the traditional 10 yards.  This request was made by the radio announcer in 1946 to help him distinguish yardage during night games.
  • First, Second, and Third Down Cheers – When on offense, LSU has unique cheers for each down.  Crazy.
  • Victory Gold – After LSU wins, the upper arches in the North End light up gold.
