Jayhawks

Win the Weekend

The chant of ‘Rock Chalk, Jayhawk’ echoing through campus at the University of Kansas gives you all the feels. Birthed from Kansas’ fierce anti-slavery fight, Lawrence was a stronghold of the free-state cause, thanks to radicals like John Brown. Today, KU is essentially Kansas City’s NBA Team about hoops with legends from the founder of basketball, James Naismith to Wilt Chamberlain, and current coach Bill Self. KU football may not have the same glittering history, they’ve had a few moments to celebrate with the fighting Mangino’s. Lawrence is a lively blend of arts, music, and historic charm, especially along bustling Mass Street.

Gameday

Although not as storied as their basketball counterparts, the University of Kansas football program has had its share of gridiron glory. KU football’s history is not without its standout stars, notably Gale Sayers, aka the ‘Kansas Comet’. In 2007, under Coach Mark Mangino, the Jayhawks achieved a 12-1 record, an Orange Bowl victory, and a final ranking of No. 7. However, it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster since then, with the team often struggling in the tough Big 12 Conference. Despite the challenges, KU football games are a beloved tradition, known for spirited tailgating at Memorial Stadium. Now, with Coach Lance Leipold at the helm, the Jayhawks are starting to turn heads.

The student section is near the South end zone is Sections 17-20, accompanied by the band in the bottom of Section 20. The Field Goal club is outdoor box seating located in the enclosed North End Zone. Sitting closer to the enclosed North End Zone provides a better view of the exterior Hill featuring the Campanile.

Visitors

The visiting sideline is on the East Side (Sections 18-26). Memorial Stadium has a classic North-South stadium layout. During winter afternoons, the East side is your sunny friend. During late summer afternoons, the West side shade will keep you from the sun.

Gameday on the Hill

KU’s official tailgate includes tents, food, TV’s and activities for $20 (plus cash bar). These tickets can be purchased through KU Athletics. This is an awesome option to minimize tailgate setup while be surrounded by a great environment.

The Stadium

Stadium History

David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium is a blend of historic charm and facilities that leave a bit to be desired. It’s nestled below the Campanile which has been the backdrop of KU football since 1921, with a seating capacity of over 47,000.

What to Watch For

  • After a touchdown or a significant play, the crowd will sway their outstretched arms above their heads like a field of wheat swaying in the wind, while the band plays the fight song, “I’m a Jayhawk.”
  • The “Rock Chalk, Jayhawk” chant is a central part of Kansas University.  If you hear the haunting, echoing chat, victory should be imminent.
