Heading to Auburn, Alabama for a gameday? Dive into our breakdown of what you should do for your upcoming trip.
War God Damn Eagle. Auburn University, located in Auburn, Alabama, was founded on February 1, 1856, as the East Alabama Male College. Initially affiliated with the Methodist Church, it became the state’s first public land-grant university in 1872. Since then, it has grown into one of the South’s premier institutions, with a strong focus on research, innovation, and community engagement. The historic campus is filled with architectural charm, featuring Samford Hall’s iconic clock tower. Auburn’s commitment to education extends globally, with renowned programs in engineering, agriculture, and veterinary medicine.

Gameday

The program began in 1892 and has since accumulated numerous conference championships and national titles. Legendary coaches like Shug Jordan and Pat Dye have left indelible marks on the program, nurturing talents like Bo Jackson and Cam Newton, both Heisman Trophy winners. The Iron Bowl, an annual clash with the University of Alabama, is one of the most heated rivalries in college sports. Auburn’s dramatic victory in the 2013 Iron Bowl, known as the “Kick Six,” is one of football’s most unforgettable moments. From the tiger-prowl walk to the eagle’s flight before kickoff, traditions run deep here.

Tailgate Traditions

Tailgating 101

Tailgating at Auburn is a celebration of community, tradition, and Southern hospitality. Fans begin setting up as early as Thursday, creating a sea of orange and blue. RVs, tents, grills, and TV screens transform the campus into a festival-like atmosphere.

The Stadium

Stadium History

Jordan-Hare Stadium, named in honor of Shug Jordan, Auburn’s winningest football coach, and Cliff Hare, a member of Auburn’s first football team, has been the Tigers’ home since 1939. With a seating capacity of over 87,000, it’s one of the largest stadiums in the Southeastern Conference. Expansions and renovations have preserved its historic charm while adding modern amenities. Notable games include the “Punt, Bama, Punt” game in 1972 and the previously mentioned “Kick Six” in 2013. When filled to capacity, the crowd’s roar is absolutely deafening, we can attest.

What to Watch For

  • The Tiger Walk, where fans line Donahue Drive to cheer the team as they walk to the stadium
  • The pregame eagle flight at Auburn University is a tradition that sends shivers down the spines of fans. The eagle is released from the upper level of the stadium and circles the field, greeted by the roars and cheers of “War Eagle!” before landing on the field.
