Win the Weekend

Heading to Tempe, Arizona for a gameday? Dive into our breakdown of what you should do for your upcoming trip.
Arizona State University (ASU) was founded in 1885 before Arizona was even a state, ASU is one of the largest public universities by enrollment in the U.S., and is recognized for its innovation, entrepreneurship, and partying. Located in the heart of the Greater Phoenix area, Tempe is a sun-soaked city full of outdoor adventures, artistic treasures, and the Mill Avenue district.

Gameday

Sun Devil football is no mirage; it’s as real as the desert heat. The program kicked off in 1897, and has seen legends like Pat Tillman and Jake the Snake Plummer leave their mark. Iconic coach Frank Kush led the team to its only Rose Bowl victory in 1987.

Tailgate Traditions

Tailgating 101

ASU takes tailgating to a scorching new level, with the infamous Inferno student section, pregame festivities at the aptly named Devil's on College, and enough maroon and gold to make the sun jealous. Rumor has it, tailgating has never been the same after Austin Cornelius left...

The Stadium

Stadium History

Sun Devil Stadium was literally carved between two Tempe mountain buttes from the desert. This desert gem has undergone several renovations since its opening in 1958, including a recent transformation into a year-round community union. It now boasts a capacity of over 53,000, ensuring a raucous crowd for every game. Memorable moments include the 1996 “Jael Mary” touchdown against USC and the 1975 undefeated season that cemented the Sun Devils as a force to be reckoned with. Opened in 1958, it’s hosted everything from the Pope to Pele to Super Bowls to Fiesta Bowls and more.

What to Watch For

  • One of the stadium’s most distinctive features is the Double Inferno student section, designed to amplify student voices and energize the crowd.
  • Tillman Tunnel, through which the players run onto the field, providing a moment of reflection and inspiration before each game.
