Win the Weekend

Heading to College Park, Maryland for a gameday? Dive into our breakdown of what you should do for your upcoming trip.
Established in 1856, the University of Maryland, located in the vibrant city of College Park, stands as a top-tier public research university, combining a rich history with a strong focus on innovation. The campus is marked by historic landmarks like the Rossborough Inn, the oldest building on campus dating back to 1804, and the Jim Henson Statue, a nod to the famous alumnus and Muppets creator. The nearby Route 1 serves as a bustling hub of activity with a myriad of bars and restaurants, providing a lively social scene for students and visitors alike. Grab your Old Bay seasoned popcorn, because no one does football and crab cakes quite like Maryland.

Gameday

The Terps’ gridiron legacy kicked off in 1892 and it’s been a roller coaster of gut-wrenching lows and sky-high highs ever since. Maryland’s real claim to fame came in the 1950s when the team was under the command of gridiron general, Jim Tatum. Tatum’s ’53 squad pulled off a jaw-dropping, perfect 10-0 season, leaving the rest of the country in their dust, and snagged the national title. Fast forward to the new millennium, and we’ve got Ralph Friedgen at the helm, a Maryland alum who bled the Terps’ red and white. The Fridge, as fans affectionately dubbed him, churned out a whopping 31 victories in his first three seasons and led the Terps to a whopping Orange Bowl berth. In recent years, the program’s been weathering some storms, but with a die-hard fanbase and that good old college park grit, the Terps are always a snap away from making history.

From its unforgettable “Queen’s Game” in ’51, where the Terps flattened the first-ranked Volunteers, to the colossal 2001 victory over NC State that clinched the ACC Championship, the echoes of cheering fans still vibrate in the newly renovated Tyser Tower.
