Heading to Oxford, Mississippi for a gameday? Dive into our breakdown of what you should do for your upcoming trip.
Hot Toddy! The University of Mississippi, affectionately known as Ole Miss, was founded in 1848 and is nestled in the charming town of Oxford. Famous for its beautiful campus, adorned with historic architecture and lush greenery, Ole Miss is a blend of Southern tradition and academic excellence. The university has been a pioneer in areas like civil rights, and the James Meredith statue commemorates the integration of the school. From the renowned School of Law to the William Faulkner collection in the library, Ole Miss is steeped in history and prestige. Ole Miss presents a tapestry of tradition, pride, and excellence that’s uniquely Southern and utterly unforgettable.

Gameday

Since the team’s inception in 1893, the Rebels have been making history and gathering loyal fans like they’re going out of style. With three claimed national championships (1959, 1960, 1962) and six SEC titles, they’re more than just a force on the field – they’re an institution. John Vaught, the man whose name graces the stadium, led the team through a golden era from 1947 to 1970. Under his watchful eye, the Rebels achieved legendary status, racking up conference titles and playing in some of the most famous bowl games. Archie Manning, the patriarch of the football-loving Manning family, became an Ole Miss legend as he dazzled fans in the late ’60s and early ’70s. His son Eli continued the family tradition, lighting up the scoreboard from 2000 to 2003.

Tailgate Traditions

Tailgating 101

The Grove, a 10-acre plot near the center of campus, is the epicenter of tailgating and one of the most famous tailgate spots in the country. From chandeliers hanging from tents to a sea of bow ties and sundresses, tailgating at Ole Miss is a uniquely elegant affair. Fans begin setting up the night before, and the aroma of Southern cuisine fills the air.

The Stadium

Stadium History

Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, opened in 1915, is the third-oldest stadium in Division I-A college football. It’s named for legendary coach John Vaught and war hero Judge William Hemingway. Expanded and renovated several times, the stadium now holds over 64,000 fans, who fill it with a deafening roar on game days. The stadium has been the battleground for many historic games, and the student section, known as the “Student Vaught,” is famous for its passion and energy.
