Established in 1890 as Oklahoma A&M, OSU is located in Stillwater, Oklahoma and is recognized for its solid programs in engineering, business, and agriculture. Stillwater shines with local hangouts like the world famous, Eskimo Joes. Definitely plan on spending plenty of time on “The Strip”, where the vibe is pure Cowboy Country.

OSU Cowboys’ football is as wild as a bucking bronco, dating back to 1901. The program’s seen standout players like Barry Sanders, who smashed records and won the Heisman in 1988. Under Coach Mike Gundy, the Cowboys have made a solid mark on Big 12 football, consistently nabbing bowl game appearances. Tradition at OSU runs deep as an Oklahoma oil well. One of the most beloved is Homecoming. Voted “America’s Greatest Homecoming Celebration,” this week-long extravaganza includes a massive parade, house decorations by the Greek community, and an epic football game, of course.

Stadium History

Boone Pickens Stadium, the Cowboys’ corral since 1920. Named after oil tycoon and OSU alumnus Boone Pickens, this gem got a major facelift in 2003, transforming it into a state-of-the-art stadium. There have been epic moments, especially when the Boys play their Bedlam brother, OU including the epic 2011 showdown where the Cowboys clinched their first Big 12 championship, for starters. Unlike most football stadiums which are traditionally oriented north-south to minimize the effect of the sun on players and spectators, Boone Pickens Stadium runs east-west. This atypical layout has been the source of many a game day strategy, with the setting sun sometimes acting as an unwelcome 12th man for visiting teams.

What to Watch For

On the football field, the ‘Paddle People,’ a group of passionate fans armed with loud paddles, add an extra layer of intimidation for visiting teams. Their rhythmic banging on the stadium walls creates a unique game day atmosphere you won’t find anywhere else.
Inspired by real-life cowboy and lawman, Frank Eaton, Pistol Pete’s larger-than-life head and cowboy attire make him a standout mascot in college sports.
