Win the Weekend

Heading to Ames, Iowa for a gameday? Dive into our breakdown of what you should do for your upcoming trip.
Welcome to the heartland, where cyclones aren’t just a weather phenomenon, they’re a lifestyle. That’s right, we’re talkin’ Iowa State University, a powerhouse in the world of tech and engineering since its founding in 1858. Nestled in the charming town of Ames, this place has more going on than cornfields. Ames, straddling the Skunk River, is a hotbed of activity with its vibrant Main Street, offering a delightful mix of eateries, shops, and cultural sites. “Hilton Magic” is less of an illusion and more of a weekly occurrence. Remember, it’s not about weathering the storm, it’s about becoming one.

Gameday

The Iowa State University football program dates back to 1892. Over the years, they have had fluctuating levels of success but have generally been competitive within the Big 12 Conference, especially under the tenure of coaches like Earle Bruce (1973-1978) and Dan McCarney (1995-2006). Notably, they have produced several notable players such as Ellis Hobbs, Kelechi Osemele, and Seneca Wallace. Under Coach Matt Campbell, who took the helm in 2016, the Cyclones enjoyed a resurgence, culminating in their first-ever appearance in the Big 12 Championship game in 2020 and a Fiesta Bowl victory over Oregon.

The Stadium

Stadium History

Jack Trice Stadium, named after the first African American athlete for ISU who tragically died due to injuries sustained on the field. Since 1975, this gridiron has witnessed some nail-biting football, including the legendary 2011 double OT win against Oklahoma State. Its 2015 renovation amped up the fan experience with added seating, improved concessions, and an enclosed south end zone. Whether it’s the ‘Sweet Caroline’ singalong or the electric energy after a big win, a game at Jack Trice Stadium is nothing short of extraordinary.
