Win the Weekend

Heading to Durham, NC for a gameday? Dive into our breakdown of what you should do for your upcoming trip.
Duke University was founded in 1838 as Brown’s Schoolhouse, a generous endowment by tobacco and electric power industrialist James Buchanan Duke. Today, Duke is a prestigious private research university located in Durham, North Carolina, and is renowned for its rigorous academic programs, cutting-edge research, and successful athletic teams. The men’s basketball team achieved elite status under legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski, affectionately known as Coach K, who led the Blue Devils to multiple national championships and produced numerous NBA talents. In recent years, the football team has experienced a resurgence under head coach David Cutcliffe, who led the Blue Devils to multiple bowl games and fostered the development of notable players like quarterback Daniel Jones, who went on to be drafted by the NFL.

Gameday

In the 1930s and 1940s, the Blue Devils, led by head coach Wallace Wade, won multiple Souther conference championships and appeared in two Rose Bowl games (1939 and 1942). The 1942 Rose Bowl was particularly notable, as it was the only time the game has been played outside of Pasadena, California, due to concerns surrounding World War II. It took place at Duke’s home stadium in Durham, North Carolina. Duke football’s unique aspects can be attributed to its recent resurgence under head coach David Cutcliffe, who has transformed the program from a struggling team to a competitive force in the ACC. Cutcliffe’s emphasis on academic success and character development in his players, combined with his reputation as a quarterback guru, sets the team apart.

The Stadium

Stadium History

Wallace Wade Stadium, home to Duke University’s football team, was built in 1929 and originally named Duke Stadium. It was later renamed in honor of Wallace Wade, the legendary football coach who led the Blue Devils to multiple Southern Conference championships and two Rose Bowl appearances. In 1966, a new press box and additional seating were added, increasing the stadium’s capacity to around 40,000 spectators. Between 2014 and 2016, the stadium underwent a significant renovation that included the removal of the track surrounding the field, lowering the field by several feet to allow for better sightlines, and adding new field-level club seats. Additionally, the project included the construction of a new press box, luxury suites, and updated concourses with improved concessions and restrooms.
