Gameday

The history of the Los Angeles Chargers traces back to their origins as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL) in 1960, founded by Barron Hilton in Los Angeles. Originally known as the Los Angeles Chargers, the team quickly made an impact with star players like quarterback Jack Kemp. After just one season, they moved to San Diego in 1961, where they became the San Diego Chargers. In San Diego, the Chargers established themselves as a competitive force in the AFL and later the NFL after the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. Led by iconic players such as Dan Fouts, Kellen Winslow, and Junior Seau, the Chargers enjoyed periods of success, including multiple playoff appearances and an AFC Championship win in 1994. They became known for their high-powered “Air Coryell” offense under head coach Don Coryell in the 1980s, revolutionizing passing strategies in the NFL. Despite these successes, the Chargers faced challenges with stadium issues and ownership changes over the years. In 2017, the team relocated back to Los Angeles, becoming the Los Angeles Chargers and sharing SoFi Stadium with the Los Angeles Rams.
